From Auckland, it’s a trip down State Highway One to Taupo then a 150 kilometre journey across the North Island to the coast taking in some amazing scenery. From Wellington it’s a 300 kilometre journey across rolling farmland and passing through the major Hawke’s Bay towns of Waipawa and Waipukurau. For those who have a little more time, the trip from Auckland can take you through the city of Gisborne and then on down the coast passing through the Hawke’s Bay town of Wairoa and then on to Hastings. It’s a little longer than the main highway but the scenery is stunning.
Hawke’s Bay airport is just a 25 minute car or taxi ride from the centre of Hastings.The airport has daily flights to the main North island centres of Auckland and Wellington and also links to Christchurch in the South Island. Flight time to Auckland or Wellington is just on an hour in Air New Zealand’s comfortable turbo prop aircraft.
The countries main bus company Intercity links Hastings with the rest of the country. Daily bus services leave Hastings for Auckland and Tauranga in the north and Wellington and Palmerston North to the south. The Intercity bus terminal is in the centre of Hastings CBD.
