Hastings Blossom Parade

The Hastings Blossom Parade is going to be bloomin’ awesome this year!

To be held on Saturday 12 September, the parade will start at 11am in the centre of Hastings.

The Hastings Blossom Parade celebrates the arrival of spring in Hawke’s Bay. This year’s theme is Great Things Grow Here.

Allocated seating is available for the elderly and disabled. Contact Creative Hastings on phone 878 9447 to arrange.

Parade route

Secure your spot early to get a good view of the Hastings Blossom Parade!

These roads will be closed from 8am until 1pm on the day for the parade set up:

  • Russell Street – from Eastbourne Street to Lyndon Road
  • Lyndon Road – from Russell Street to Hastings Street
  • Warren Street – from Lyndon Road to the Library entrance
  • Heretaunga Street – from Hastings Street to Russell Street
  • Heretaunga Street – from Nelson Street to Market Street

How to be part of the 2015 Blossom Parade

With a prize pool of almost $5,000 up for grabs, there is no excuse not to enter a float in the Hastings Blossom Parade 2015. A $500 cash prize will be offered to entries that win an award. A people’s choice award will also be on offer and may attract as much as $1,000 in prize money.

Participants will have the option to compete in one of seven categories; Best Community, Best School, Best Business, Best use of Natural Flowers, Best Use of Artificial Flowers, Best Humour and Best Dressed Individual or Group.

How can I participate?

The Parade will once again be highly colorful, exciting and full of fun for everyone who lines the streets to watch this iconic event. There are a number of ways that you can be part of the parade:

  • Build a float as a business or community organisation
  • Decorate a car, motorbike, bicycle or pram to promote your organisation
  • Be part of a performance/dance group
  • Encourage your school or sports team or social club to participate
  • Form a New Orleans style marching band or Brazilian Samba band
  • Dress up with your friends and join the parade in your best blossom themed outfit
  • Sponsor an entry

Categories 

All entries in any of the following categories need to interpret this year’s theme for the Hastings Blossom Parade: Spring – Back to the Future. Blossom Festival event management team and judges reserve the right to reject any entry deemed offensive or unsafe to be included in the parade proceedings. Please note that any floats should comply with basic health and safety requirements and not exceed dimensions of standard road legal vehicles

  • Best Community – Any entry from a community organisation, club, ethnic group or neighbourhood association
  • Best School – Any school or learning institution starting from play centre, kindergartens through to college. We encourage students to design and build the entries best representing what the school or learning institution stands for
  • Best Business/Trade – Any local business/trade to showcase and celebrate its people, product/service and contribution to Hawke’s Bay and beyond
  • Best use of Natural Blossoms – A serious challenge to people who want to use natural blossoms to create a float rivalling some of the masterpieces of the past
  • Best use of Artificial Blossoms – The use of artificial blossoms of any kind to create a memorable entry
  • Best Humour – Whatever may inspire you in this section, be it satire, slapstick or plain old-fashioned humour it has to generate more than a just a lame smile to be a winning contender for this category
  • Best Dressed Individual or Group – Any individual or group a chance to get dressed up and be part of the wonderful spectacle that is the 2014 Hastings Blossom Parade

What prizes are on offer?

There will be a few categories you can choose from and a $500 cash prize will be offered to entries that win an award.

A People’s Choice Award will also be on offer and may attract as much as $1,000 in prize money.

Artificial blossom cutting

In past years, Creative Hastings, has offered to cut out your blossom shapes from crepe paper for you. This service will still be offered so if would like to take advantage of the opportunity please bring your crepe paper to the Hastings Community Art Centre as soon as possible and we will endeavour to assist you with this.

Crepe paper

If you need crepe paper, Aaron’s Emporium on 39 Carlyle Street in Napier has a good range. If you are buying large quantities ask for a discount. Uncle Bill’s and The Warehouse in Hastings may also have limited stocks.

Volunteers

We are always on the lookout for volunteers to dress up in a costume and take part in the parade or to help out behind the scenes. Just let us know!
