The week long show in March is the very epitome of equestrian in New Zealand, bringing together multiple disciplines and tens of thousands of equine enthusiasts from around the country. Held at the Hastings A&P Showgrounds from 7-12 March, Horse of the Year – or HOY, as it’s known to its passionate following – is perhaps the most exciting week of equestrian sport in the southern hemisphere.
There really is something for everyone at the show with 2017 promising a fantastic range of things to do and see. The competition ramps up all week with Saturday featuring the exhilarating cross country phase of the eventing as well as the famed Pony of the Year show jumping class, where under seventeens compete to take away the coveted Somerset Fair cup. Sunday dawns with the final round of the pony team competition, followed by the Junior Rider of the Year, and then the class that’s absolutely not to miss, the Olympic Cup. Featuring the very best show jumping horses and riders from around the country the Olympic Cup often attracts international attention with Australian riders flying across the ditch to try and pocket the rich purse.
